This sounds like such a fun trip, Renee! I was born in Roanoke VA and the star is special to me. My son and his family will be visiting Colonial Wmsburg after our beach vacation this fall--what is the name of the yarn store in that area? Glad you had a great time!
Sally, I would love to go back and see everything we didn't have time for! Monticello for one! The yarn store in CW is called Colorful Stitches Fine Yarn and it's on Duke of Gloucester St., but at the "modern" end near William and Mary. There is an excellent little lunch place right there called The Cheese Shop that makes sandwiches to order and it's a perfect spot to get recharged. I would say that for taking kids... definitely schedule in time to see the Fife and Drum march at the end of the day. Also, just get the tickets so you can go in to the shops/buildings and talk to the craftspeople. They LOVED having kids who were interested and asked questions. Be sure to go into the George Wythe House and TOUCH the same bannister that George Washington did. He stayed there to plan the battle of Yorktown and Thomas Jefferson read law in that house. Amazing!
Lovely list! Thank you for the spoonbread recipe. It's been 24 years (?) since I had it but still remember it.
They brought it to our table in a cast iron pan and literally spooned it onto our plates. It was memorable!
Gideon Ridge was a great choice. It is sooo lovely!
That was a fun read and makes me want to do this trip! We always head the other direction, but we really need to head east sometime!
It was a first for us too, but so worth it!
